Il “TOESP - Test Of English For Specific Purposes” è la certificazione linguistica che verifica le abilità di comunicare, scrivere, comprendere e leggere, in ambiti specialistici, nonché la conoscenza delle strutture caratterizzanti e della terminologia di base di domini specifici dell’inglese scientifico. Nella sua flessibile articolazione, il TOESP può verificare anche singole abilità in specifici campi: produzione scritta e/o orale, capacità ricettive, listening e reading. Il TOESP è la certificazione rivolta al mondo universitario, ai corsi di Laurea, di specializzazione, ai Master ed alla Scuola Secondaria di Secondo Grado che intendono preparare, esaminare e certificare la competenza dell’inglese scientifico dei loro studenti e dottorandi, proponendo una certificazione specialistica per ogni settore scientifico. Il corso di preparazione al TOESP prevede una metodologia innovativa che attualizza le potenzialità didattiche di “Acquisition Helpers” e “Memory Helpers” che trasmette la capacità di apprendere e di utilizzare con correttezza e competenza i termini che sono caratteristici di un ambito scientifico e settoriale. Gli “Acquisition Helpers” e “Memory Helpers”, oltre a preparare al superamento del TOESP, trovano applicazione anche nella Scuola Secondaria di Primo e Secondo Grado per la preparazione per le programmazioni CLIL; attraverso gli “Acquisition Helpers” e “Memory Helpers” gli studenti apprenderanno in modo duraturo la terminologia tipica e caratteristica di una materia curricolare mettendo a frutto le interazioni tra l’evoluzione delle scienze e le dinamiche dei cambiamenti linguistici e culturali. Gli “Acquisition Helpers” e “Memory Helpers” di fatto permettono di sviluppare il consolidamento e l’assimilazione di quei processi linguistici, naturali nella lingua madre, che devono altresì essere sollecitati nell’apprendimento dell’inglese, andando ad accrescere una naturale percezione e precisione nella scelta dei vocaboli che assumono significato nella “proposizione” e poi nella giusta sintassi del discorso scientifico. Il TOESP valuta dunque le quattro abilità linguistiche: lettura, comprensione, scrittura e discussione di testi scientifici, e attraverso gli “Acquisition Helpers” e “Memory Helpers” sollecita un processo di auto-apprendimento, come: • il saper interpretare i neologismi, le capacità di problem solving linguistico, la competenza lessicale e terminologica nella lingua madre e in quella in fase di apprendimento nonché la capacità di positive transfer tra le lingue conosciute. • la capacità di individuare il processo formativo, gli elementi che formano un termine e di utilizzare tali conoscenze non solo per comprendere ma anche per valutare la rilevanza pragmatica e internazionale dei vocaboli e dei neologismi sia delle lingue generali sia dei linguaggi specialistici. • la capacità di interpretare le innovazioni lessicali e morfosintattiche nelle strutture della comunicazione scientifica, in particolare il processo di semplificazione delle strutture morfosintattiche che è in atto a livello globale e l’esigenza crescente di internazionalizzare la terminologia. Il TOESP, oltre a verificare le competenze raggiunte, orienta e adegua la formazione linguistica, tenendo presente le dinamiche dei cambiamenti linguistici, i processi di validazione e normalizzazione della terminologia e della neologia. Il TOESP - Test Of English For Specific Purposes con il suo metodo di preparazione, attraverso gli “Acquisition Helpers” e i “Memory Helpers” , sviluppa la capacità di inferenza e permette il raggiungimento di un’approfondita conoscenza delle strutture lessicali e grammaticali del linguaggio specialistico. Conseguire la certificazione TOESP significa aver appreso con facilità e naturalezza un linguaggio caratteristico di un determinato ambito della conoscenza umana, semplicemente attraverso l’attivazione di processi cognitivi insiti nella nostra mente e a cui attingiamo ogni qualvolta dobbiamo apprendere un nuovo vocabolo, sia nella nostra lingua madre che in una seconda o terza lingua. - Progetto di Sviluppo Il “TOESP - Test Of English For Specific Purposes” è stato pensato in seno alle Università. La realizzazione della certificazione TOESP trova attuazione attraverso la sinergia tra il settore universitario, che ne cura gli aspetti metodologici/specialistici, e l’Ente Certificatore Internazionale British Institutes, che mette a disposizione la sua piattaforma di test on-line, le competenze procedurali richieste dalle direttive del Consiglio d’Europa e la pluriennale esperienza nella certificazione linguistica della popolazione studentesca.

The “TOESP - Test Of English For Specific Purposes” is the language certification that assesses a student’s ability to communicate, read and write in specialist fields, and his/her knowledge of the structures peculiar to the language and of basic terminology, using lexical structures specific to certain spheres of scientific English. The TOESP has been conceived in an extremely flexible manner so that each of the skills can be tested in specific fields: written and/or oral production, receptive capacities, listening and reading. TOESP certification focuses its attention on the world of university, on First Degree, Secondary School education, Advanced Degree and Masters Degree courses which aim at preparing, examining and certifying the scientific English proficiency level of their undergraduate and postgraduate students, offering specialist certification for each scientific sector. The TOESP certificate originates from the concept that a language and its vocabulary represent a system in which the constituent parts interact and change over time, giving rise to a continual lexical enrichment that is reflected, first and foremost, in scientific language. The TOESP preparatory course is, in fact, geared to prompting and developing the consolidation and assimilation of those linguistic processes, natural in the mother tongue, which must be similarly stimulated in the learning of English, thereby contributing to the growth of a natural perception and precision in the choice of words, which assume meaning in the “statement” and, subsequently, in the correct syntax of the scientific discourse. Not only do "Acquisition Helpers" and "Memory Helpers" prepare students for the TOESP exam, they can also be implemented in Middle and Secondary School education to prepare students for the CLIL programmes. By means of "Acquisition Helpers" and "Memory Helpers", students will be able to acquire the peculiar and specific terms pertaining to a curricular subject that shall be taught in English, which will thus be used as a medium language. The TOESP preparatory course provides students with “Acquisition Helpers” and “Memory Helpers”, strategies that serve to help them learn and hence use the terms specific to a given scientific sphere correctly and knowledgeably. The TOESP, therefore, assesses all four linguistic skills: reading, comprehension, writing and discussion of scientific texts and, at the same time, it stimulates a process of self-learning that focuses on: • interpretation of neologisms, linguistic problem solving capacities, lexical and terminological skills both in the mother tongue and in the language being learned and the capacity of positive transfer between known languages. • the capacity to identify the learning process, the elements that make up a term and to use this knowledge, not only for understanding but also for assessing the pragmatic and international relevance of neologisms. • the capacity to interpret lexical and morphosyntactic innovations in the structures of scientific communication, with particular regard to the simplification of morphosyntactic structures that is taking place at a global level. The TOESP, in addition to assessing the skill levels achieved, also orientates and adapts the learning pathway, taking into account the dynamics of linguistic change, of terminology and neology validation and normalisation processes. The TOESP - Test Of English For Specific Purposes - with its preparatory method that uses “Acquisition Helpers” and “Memory Helpers”, enables students to gain in-depth knowledge of the specialist vocabulary, hamonised in scientific contexts. Achieving TOESP certification means having successfully mastered, with ease and naturalness, a language that distinguishes a given sphere of human knowledge, simply by activating inborn cognitive processes which we draw on every time we have to learn a new word, whether it be in our own language or in a second or third language. - Development Project The “TOESP - Test Of English For Specific Purposes” was conceived and developed within University. The realisation of TOESP certification is effectively achieved through the synergy created between the university sector – which handles its methodological/specialist aspects – and the British Institutes International Certifying Body, which places at students’ disposal its on-line test platform, the procedural expertise required by the directives of the Council of Europe and its many years of experience in the student language certification sector. The project envisages the involvement of reference Universities throughout the European Community, with a view to preparing specific examinations for each scientific sector, e.g. for Political Science, Economics, Medicine, Pharmacology etc….. For the development and dissemination of TOESP certification at national and international Universities, the following will be provided: preparatory method; lecture notes and training seminars; texts and bibliographical references; entrance test; mid-course test, end of course test and relative implementation procedures; awarding of TOESP certification. The language learning methodology on which the TOESP method is based is adopted both in degree courses and in secondary schools, through training seminars that involve and prepare teachers to learn and apply the method.
